Take care of yourselves, and if you’d like to read a middle grade book that does contain child abuse but also features the protagonists getting into a healthy foster care situation and learning how to deal with their trauma, Colleen recommends Fighting Words by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, which won the 2021 Newbery Honor Award, and which Colleen specifically thinks is one of the best depictions of this topic in children’s literature (though definitely check the content warnings ahead of time if needed because there are a lot).
